It is commonly asked question by many social networking site users that whether to share anything publicly or privately? Well it’s actually tough to wave green flag to any one of them, yet the simplest answer could be – It depends!
Few days ago, I had really interesting discussion with some talented peoples over Google+. Our topic was whether public sharing is better or private sharing and it eventually turns out that both are good and essential at a same time. It’s not always good to share some things publicly as well as not always good to remain in private world.
On social networking sites like Google+, Facebook, LinkedIn etc. there always one common option resides next to the post you are going to share which asks you to select the audience to which that post will be visible. The default option is Public but you can always change it before/after posting anything. Other to that option, Google+ offers sharing with your circles, selected peoples or communities. LinkedIn offers sharing with your connections, Facebook offers sharing with friends or lists and likewise on other social networking sites.
Now the important question is which audience to select as your active and trusted listeners in order to showcase your content. First of all, you’ve to categorize your post and see whether it falls under promotion, presentation, re-sharing or any other type. Then you can decide which sharing settings you’ll need to apply.
- Public sharing
The name itself suggests that the post will be in public display. Public posts are open access content for everybody only to view and logged-in users might like/comment/share it depending upon the settings imposed by post creator. Public posts certainly able to receive more views/comments since they’ve comparatively more audience available than private posts.
Meeting with new peoples across the world is likely very simple because of public sharing. You can see public posts to know others as well as can share your posts publicly with other peoples to know you. Public sharing is harmless for certain limit, given that you’re doing it correctly.
Peoples like photographers, social media marketers, business promoters, bloggers and like that are mostly to share their content publicly. Public sharing not only brings more comments on their posts but also beneficiary to them to fetch more customers.
- Plus side
1. Public posts are attention grabbing due to large audience
2. For marketing or advertising purpose, public sharing is beneficial as it can bring more listeners to your posts.
3. More easy to meet new peoples and increase your interaction with them
4. Helps to increase number of connections/followers
- Minus side
1. Content theft is leading drawback of public posts because the content is accessible to anyone.
2. Chances of spam in comments
3. Not good for sharing extra sensitive content
- Private sharing
Private sharing option is intended to present your content only in front of limited users. A private post never appears in any search result for third-party users and thus they can’t view that post. Private sharing is more confidential than public and restricts unwanted peoples from accessing it.
Private sharing cart off your chances of meeting new peoples and restricts your conversation with countable peoples. You can’t give a chance to strangers to know you as well as strangers remain aliens for you. Although it’s good for peoples who are little introverts and don’t feel secure talking with any random person.
Private sharing is better option for sharing sensitive content. For example, your own photos (aka selfies) that you don’t want to show in publicly, any kind of discussion or Q & A which involves only selected peoples etc.
- Plus side
1. Good for sharing private content with limited group of folks
2. Data theft chances are very negligible (provided that the group of peoples is trusted)
3. Clutter free interaction with your audience
- Minus side
1. Limited views/comments on posts
2. Not effective for promotional purpose
3. No opportunity to meet new peoples
4. Limited connections
While wrapping up my post I’ll say, one simply should not choose any particular sharing option permanently and stick with it forever. You have to decide what you want in return on your post and then accordingly make choice of sharing setting. Different kinds of posts need different kinds of reactions, so pick your audience suitable with it.
In my observation on different social networking sites and experience of so far interaction with many peoples, I’ve concluded that sharing of any post is purpose dependent. If you want to publicize your post, need more interaction, more view counts then public sharing is best. On the other hand, if privacy is your first concern then private sharing is for good option for you.
